Brian Sartor is an ArtPrize Artist, reflecting on his experience with school students at his venue during ArtPrize Eight. His 2016 entry, VICTORY, created with Stephan Farland in their collaborative, THE CHAIRmen, landed in the Public Vote Final 20.
As ArtPrize Eight got underway, bus loads of students ranging from grade school to high school were ushered through the lobby of the Homewood Suites by Hilton in the Waters Building, where my artwork, [VICTORY,] was being exhibited.
The students had worksheets in hand and were on a mission to find art and ask specific questions. Some asked for autographs. One little boy sat by my feet the entire time.
After his class was gathered and they left, his teachers anxiously approached me and asked if I had spoken with the boy. I replied that I had and said that he was asking questions about the artwork. They then revealed to me that the boy had never spoken to them or his classmates. Chills shivered down my spine.
In that moment, I rediscovered the power and inspiration of artwork on young minds.
