Art represents life. It allows for self-expression, social commentary and self reflection in many forms. It helps us to make sense of our lives and our world without putting us in a box of constraints and rules.
Since Coit Creative Arts Academy has attended ArtPrize the last several years, our students have been inspired on multiple levels. The exposure to art in its many forms and the messages behind them have led to great classroom discussions and, ultimately, great collaborative project ideas.
The most recent project involved our 5th grade class visiting Heron Manor Retirement Home—where we presented our favorite pictures from ArtPrize. We then broke our students into groups with some of the residents and ideated on a project we could both collaborate on that would best showcase our Primary Years Program Learner Profile Attributes. Each group presented their ideas to the whole class, and one was collectively decided upon.
The idea is to create a tree and have one half be "Spring—Coit" and the other half be "Fall—Heron Manor" to represent the upcoming generations and the older generations. The leaves will be made with the hand prints of the students and the residents. This will be made on canvas using acrylic paint and then hung in the halls at Heron Manor.
We're truly lucky to have such an amazing partner in ArtPrize!
